- oIn my official "1991 Ham Photo Calendar with Contest and DX Reference",
- there is a contest listed for March 16th as:
-
- "County 10 PH 1200Z (36)"
-
- Which I would translate as some kind of 10 meter county hunters phone contest
- starting at 1200Z and lasting 36 hours. However, I cannot find a reference
- to this contest in any of the major ham radio magazines (QST, CQ, 73, Radio
- Scan). Before I run out to Delaware this weekend, does anyone know if this
- contest is really happening?

- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- A few people have been asking about the 462 - 467 MHZ "CB" band and this may
- clear somethings up.
-
- This frequency band is better known as the GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service).
-
- Who can get a license: Any individual can get a license.
-
- How : Just fill out the FCC form 574 and send it in with $30
- The form is somewhat of a pain to fill out (i.e. very specific).
-
- The frequencies are given out in pairs so that a repeater can be used.
- The maximum power output is 50 watts and you are technically allowed only
- one frequency pair.

- It's not practical for a full-power HF transceiver. 20 Amps at 12 volts
- is 1/3 horsepower, even assuming 100% generator efficiency, which is
- a bit more than the average out-of-shape ham can manage!
-
- I have heard of people just using a standard bicycle light generator

- You only have to make 5 contacts to qualify, I believe.

- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- A question for those wiser than I....
-
- My friend's cable tv gets interrupted several times a week by
- what I think are ham operators. I can get parts of a callsign
- at times, but have yet to understand anything clearly enough
- to be sure of the call. Repeated calls to the local CATV company
- have not solved their problems. If we are able to hear a clear
- call, what should we do? I know I can look up the operator's
- name and address, but what then? Send the ham police? Call up
- and leave nasty messages? Leave nice messages?
-
- I am not a ham user, but I have a friend (out of town) who has
- explained some of what I described above. Any suggestions?

- From having operated just such an antenna for many years, I can claim
- that this is definitely NOT true. The bandwidth is just fine. Since
- the resistance of the wire lowers the Q, it may even be a bit broader
- than one made of heavy wire, but I was unable to measure that difference.
- Mine covered 40 meters just fine.

- By the way, many thanks to Diane Syriac for all the work putting the exams
- into hypercard. I forgot to mention that in my previous posting.
